Benefits Of Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is probably the oldest form of medical treatment. The use of water to soothe pains and disease has been recorded in ancient Egyptian, Roman and Greek times. Coupled with this history, substantial recent evidence proves the benefit of this totally natural treatment for a number of disorders including musculoskeletal, spinal injuries, strokes and paralysis.

Warm water has the power to improve blood and lymph circulation, relax tension in the tissues, alleviate pain and calm the nervous system.

Swimming in cold water and rivers is not recommended for dogs due to dangerous algae and other hazards; cold water will also reduce blood circulation.  Hydrotherapy is a safe and effective form of treatment; a 5 minute swim is equivalent to a 5 mile run for a dog!

Over the years at The Canine Academy we have treated hundreds of dogs and have witnessed some remarkable success stories where dogs previously regarded as ‘lost causes’ have made outstanding recoveries.

With the hydrotherapy and spa treatment, many of our customers’ dogs have recovered from paralysis and severe injury, along with the improved muscle mass and confidence that this new fitness brings.  Muscle wastage starts occurring a few days after inactivity so it is important to build up the muscle and strength as quickly as possible.  Hydrotherapy will also benefit fit dogs, including improving muscle tone for working and racing dogs.

A controlled swim in the Hydrotherapy Pool will give your dog the ultimate benefit of non weight-bearing exercise and hot water therapy.

We are confident that all dogs will receive some benefit from the exercise, enjoying the experience; for many it is the highlight of their week!

Hydrotherapy is also regarded as one of the most cost effective treatments, with dogs often requiring less medication.

How We Help

After being assessed by our experienced staff, your dog will enter the pool for a controlled and monitored swim.  After a short rest they will enter the water again for another swim. Following this exercise they will enjoy the relaxing and therapeutic heated spa pool and massage.  Finally, they will be shampooed and dried before leaving. Your dog’s muscle strength and fitness will gradually build up over a course of treatment.
